Ironically, the Google Bot is now trying to "ensure people see more original, helpful content written by people, for people". Interesting times ahead for rankings and over-optimized pages, but it seems that valuable content will still reign supreme.
Google's latest search update is called the 'Helpful Content Update' and started rollingout today. This looks like a rehash of their content guidelines but will now be actively applied to the search results. According to Google, "this update introduces a new site-wide signal that we consider among many other signals for ranking web pages. Our systems automatically identify content that seems to have little value, low-added value or is otherwise not particularly helpful to those doing searches." It will be interesting to see how this affects the organic search results, but hopefully this will clean up some of the low-quality results that seems to be everywhere.
