Changing the background and text colors in Ubuntu 20.04 terminal
The terminal in Ubuntu 20.04 has a default purplish background color. If purple happens to not be your favorite color, or you just like exploring things, you may want to change the default colors of the terminal.
I found the process not being very straightforward and thought it would be good to share a brief and simple-to-follow guide on how to do it.
How to change Ubuntu 20.04 terminal colors
Step 1: Click on the 3-horizontal lines menu at the top-right of the terminal, then select "Preferences" from the drop-down.
Step 2: Click on the "Unnamed" option on the left side of the window that opens.
A window opens that looks as shown below:
Step 3: Click on the "Colors" tab.
The colors tab opens with multiple colors customization options. However, clicking on the built-in schemes select options, text or background color options does nothing. You have to first enable it.
Step 4: Enable changing of system default colors by unchecking on "Use colors from system theme".
Step 5: Change the background and/or text color as per your preference by:
i). Selecting from options in the built-in schemes or;
ii). Click on the boxes under "Text" and "Background" and choose your preferred colors to change text and background colors respectively.
While changing the colors, switch to the terminal window to see the colors you select in real-time.
Once satisfied with a color scheme, close the preferences window and the colors will apply immediately.
