  • ⚖️ The European Parliament has approved the Artificial Intelligence Act: the world's first comprehensive framework to regulate AI. This law is intended to ensure the safety of AI systems on the EU market and provide legal certainty for investments and innovation in AI while minimizing risks to consumers and compliance costs for providers. The main idea is to regulate AI based on its capacity to cause harm to society. AI applications that pose a "clear risk to fundamental rights" will be banned - like those that process biometric data. Generative AI tools (like the eponymous ChatGPT) and chatbots need to disclose the material used to train their models. This provision, in particular, will have publishers heaving a sigh of relief: remember NYT’s lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement to train their respective models? Needless to say, those developing GenAI models are fighting tooth and nail to resist curtailment. It’s not just the EU: a few months ago, the White House issued an Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence to advance a coordinated approach toward the safe and responsible development of AI. The Wild West era of AI is ending, slowly but surely. Rather than restrict innovation and use, I think a robust legislative framework will make models clearer, more focused, and better fit for purpose. And I, for one, am glad.
