Magento 2.4 Features: What’s New

Since 2015 Magento Commerce has been empowering merchants, helping them to deliver the best online shopping experience. The new Magento 2.4 update continues doing so with new features and improvements. Let’s see what it means for Magento users.

To guide you through the most critical points, we’ll need some help from our backend developer Maxym, a Magento developer, and contributor. For the past 3 years, Maxym has been one of the leading Magento contributors and is currently one of the authors of Magento’s DevBlog. To shed light on the newest 2.4 updates, we’ll be referring to his latest article for more technical insights.

So what’s included in Magento 2.4? While there are many changes in this release, here are the essential ones you need to know

New Core Updates

Each Magento release offers new updates and fixes to improve and secure the platform. Magento 2.4 is no different, and it now includes the following:

  • Support for PHP 7.4, PHPUnit 9.x
  • Support for Elasticsearch 7.x and MySQL 8.0
  • Replaced MySQL search engine with Elasticsearch
  • Web Setup Wizard removed
  • Composer update plugin
  • Page Builder now supports PHP 7.4 for Magento Commerce 2.4
  • Replaced Zend Framework (EOL) with Laminas
  • Added support for PHPStan, a static analysis tool

New Features and Performance

Another great feature is the updated Magento 2.4 Media Gallery. It now has a modern and more intuitive UI and is 30% faster than the previous version! Additionally, it can also be connected to Adobe Stock and allows users to filter images by name or other details like where and how often the images are used.

There are also some exciting performance improvements with the latest release:

  • Products Landing Page (PLP) – up to 14%
  • Search – up to 13%
  • Product Details Page (PDP) – up to 5%
  • Add to cart – up to 30%
  • Check out – up to 15%
  • Success Page – up to 10%

Impressive, right?

Security Updates

Security patches and fraud protection are vital towards maintaining your website’s data safe and need to be updated as soon as available. With the new Magento 2.4 update, Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is now available. It offers increased protection for any user requiring access to the store’s administrative area by directing a temporary, per-client code and the user’s password.

Also, to guarantee compliance and better performance, Magento is offering support for the tech stack components: ElasticSearch 7 and PHP 7.4.

In-Store Pick Up and Full Bundle Support

What was once an uncommon, almost experimental combination of the online and offline worlds, the in-store pick-up has become a customer expectation for merchants of all sizes across multiple geographies and industry verticals.

Magento 2.4 now offers support for grouped products and partial support for bundle products. Thus, bundle products are now fully compatible!

Other new updates include choosing a pick-up location during checkout and sending customers an email notification. Besides, you can now use the Vendor Bundled Extension from Braintree to offer an even wider variety of payment options for your customers, all of which are PCI/PSD2 compliant.
