In light of the on-going situation regarding COVID-19, and after significant discussions and debate, the Board of Directors of Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) has decided that it will not host the Troutfest TX (TFTX) event in 2021, and instead will focus on 2022 for the next event. The GRTU Board made this decision in an abundance of caution and after evaluating numerous options. There were several key factors for the decision. First and foremost, GRTU took into account the safety and well-being of members and event attendees. Hopefully, this newsletter finds everyone safe and well, its been a strange end to our current LAP and stranger start to our summer in the shadow of COVID-19.  As you all have probably realized, our Chapter meeting (face to face) will not be happening however, we encourage you to stay involved with your TU national and GRTU online resources.  If you visit the TU national website, you will find many interesting articles and stories about conservation efforts and how the rest of the country is handling the social distancing and staying involved.  It is hard to imagine that as a country we have been slowed down by this virus and our daily lives changed. It is important to point out the positives that have come out of this pandemic too.

Thankfully Troutfest TX 2020 took place before COVID-19 changed the world. Thank you to the small army of GRTU volunteers that dedicated their time and talent to make this year’s event a huge success! Once again, the Friday night banquet sold out, we had a great line-up of speakers, awesome exhibitors and a packed pavilion for the Fly Fishing Film Tour movie night. This years’ banquet did not disappoint! We were honored to have Tom Rosenbauer of the Orvis Company in from Vermont as our Keynote speaker. His passion for fly fishing is an inspiration and it was so fun to show him some Texas hospitality. More information about the NLC can be found at https://www.tu.org/NLC  and on page 20 of the spring edition of TROUT magazine. The COVID pandemic has required changes from everyone, including Trout Unlimited. At this writing, the national office staff is working from home, and the date to re-open the offices is pending. In-person chapter meetings and regional rendezvous have been postponed or cancelled. The TU Annual Membership meeting will be a virtual event, with meetings occurring on Zoom. The meeting is scheduled for Oct 25.  Next fall our hope is to hold our in-person annual meeting in Bangor, Maine which was the intended location this year. In spite of the pandemic, NLC workgroups continue meeting regularly to continue the work of TU in conservation work groups and organizational workgroups. Participation

The word for the Guadalupe in Summer 2020 is “hot.” Inflow and outflow at Canyon Lake are currently below average for this time of year. On the upside, the lake is close to full and a couple of good rains this fall might give us some nice flows by December.  Due to the lower flows, water temperatures below Canyon Dam are elevated. We’re are currently seeing low to mid 70s close to the dam, with temperatures continually rising the further downstream you get from the dam. Simply put, it is currently not advisable to fish the Guadalupe for trout.   Some of you may have noticed that the temperature monitors stopped relaying data in mid July. This was an oversight that I hope to have rectified in the next few weeks.   If

The GRTU Lease Access Program will be open for enrollment on Thursday, October 1, 2020. If you are new to GRTU, the Lease Access Program (LAP), is a partnership with multiple private landowners to provide access to river. There will be between 16-18 access spots on the Guadalupe with limited parking and a pathway to the water.  In order to secure your lease, you will need to have a valid Trout Unlimited membership that runs through October 31st, 2021. If you joined TU this year please contact TU national at 1-800-834-2419 and make sure your membership spans through October 31, 2021.  There is a 2-3 week lag between TU national and GRTU’s membership database. This COVID-19 pandemic has put the world on it’s ear and it would really interfere with my normal fly fishing adventures. I fished the Guadalupe up to March 15. Just when this year’s dry fly fishing was really picking up, I decided that, with my 91-year-old mother living with me and my past medical history of heart attacks, I needed for personal reasons, to hunker down and stay at home. Now most summers I spend somewhere between 3 and 6 weeks fly fishing the Rockies. These plans are made about 9 months out to tie in with my timeshare. It has been an interesting year. A year where memberships to gyms for LAP members were simply no longer necessary. We have had high to “TOO” high flows most of the season. Wading in the river has been somewhere between exhausting to a leap of faith most the season. Nonetheless the fishing for trout has been very rewarding. This year’s stocking went exceptionally well. Volunteers turned out in good numbers to help get our trout into the river. And let’s talk about the fish we stocked this year. The first rainbow stocking was the “BIG” fish drop. Most trout were about 18″ with many trout 4-5 lb range placed in spots held secret by those slipping them into the water!!! The second stocking was the numbers stocking, generally smaller fish,
