We like the qualities we get from Sauvignon Blanc harvested in the north of Napa Valley. The warm Calistoga AVA boasts the largest diurnal shift between daytime and nighttime temperatures in Napa Valley. This allows for optimal ripeness in the fruit in addition to maintaining its natural acidity. The 2018 and 2019 versions of our Willamette Pinot Noir went head-to-head 
in a recent issue of Food and Wine magazine, and it was a tie: Both wines 
scored 93 points and won a place on their Top 50 US Pinots list.

Harvest Update 2022

As we begin sharing more of our 2019 Pinot Noirs with you, we often find 
ourselves remarking on the comparison between the 2018s and 2019s. The 2018 
vintage shows the darker, richer side of the Willamette Valley, while the 
2019s highlight brighter fruit and elegant structure.

Tasting Room Is Open - 2021 Pinot Blanc

Our 2018 Chard was the first of our wines to sell out earlier this year. We 
have a little room to plant more, but those vines wouldn’t be producing 
grapes for several years. Since we have over 22 acres of mature Pinot Noir, 
we decided to graft an acre of Pinot over to Chardonnay to increase our 
production more quickly.

There's been a lot of talk Oregon’s recent record-setting heat wave. Now 
that a week has gone by and we’ve had a few chances to walk the vineyard, I 
can honestly say the vines seem to have shrugged it off.

Handling the Heat

As a winemaker, I am thrilled to be learning more and more about this clone 
as we get to know our new home. We only made 135 cases of the 2020, but 
look for more in the future!

IT ALL BEGINS IN THE VINEYARD

Pinot noir is all about subtlety, and needs to be handled with care to show its full range of aromas and textures.&nbsp; When the fruit gets to the winery, the TLC starts at the sorting table.&nbsp; We inspect the fruit as it moves over conveyer belt, looking for anything we don’t want in the fermenter.&nbsp; In some years we are focused on botrytis or bird damage, but in 2020 the fruit was so clean we were mostly just pulling out leaves.&nbsp; A great wine starts with great raw materials, so we make sure everything is perfect. &nbsp;This harvest, partners George Rickus and John Gorup each had their turns at the table. “It was fun,” said George. “It’s very satisfying to get my hands (literally) in the process and contribute as much as I can. I’m looking forward to tasting the finished product in a few years.”

A selection of award winners is featured at the annual trade-only TEXSOM Conference in seminars, tastings, and meals. In August over 100 winners were poured for attendees.

In September we returned to our signature event with our friends at the Ferry Plaza WIne Merchant in San Francisco. Consumer enthusiasts and trade professionals were in attendance to taste selections representing a wide variety of producers and countries. We look forward to returning next October. The TEXSOM Awards Production Team assists with the TEXSOM Awards leading up to and throughout the event. Team members learn and practice wine receiving, inventory procedures, label verification, and help to organize and stage wines and spirits. 

The exposure to so many beverages, including wines, ciders, meads, sakes, and spirits, has been noted by previous team members as one of the highlights of the experience that offers perspective on the breadth and depth of the wine world. 

Interaction amongst the verification team allows the chance to discuss appellations, grape varieties, wine styles, and laws affecting wine. 

In addition, learning alongside Awards Panel Teams, Retreat Mentors and Participants, TEXSOM Staff, and fellow volunteers helps those in hospitality develop new ideas about the execution of events in their own businesses, as well as creates important connections with industry professionals representing a variety of markets throughout the country.

Whether you are already in the industry or have an interest in learning more about a wide range of beverages, we invite you to submit a form. Participants must be 21 years of age.

For Sonoma County’s wine industry, which continues to seek innovative ways to grapple with the state’s crippling drought, rainwater capture could be a meaningful step towards reducing its water consumption.

Earlier this week we shared the overall report for the entire American wine industry, and now it's time to dive into the California 2022 report! 

The report shows 27% growth in statewide impact (from $57.6 to $73 billion) and 49% in national impact (from $114.1 to $170.5 billion) over the past six years. This robust expansion — during a challenging period that included a devastating pandemic — shows the strength and resiliency of the nation’s top wine-producing state as an economic engine.

The 2022 National Economic Impact Study of the Wine Industry has been released and highlights the how the industry provides American jobs, attracts tourists, generates taxes, and enhances the quality of life across the country.

From generating over $276 billion for the US economy in 2022, to $16.69 billion in annual tourism expenditures, discover the numbers behind the American wine industry in the report  at the link below(which also includes detailed data for each state).

The stories of Latinos -- particularly Mexican-Americans — in the wine industry were often relegated to those who prune or graft the vines or work in the cellars. But that's changing as Latino vintners grow in number and influence.
