Medium exists to share ideas and perspectives from the world’s most insightful writers, thinkers, and storytellers.

We welcome thoughtful and civil discussion from a broad spectrum of viewpoints. Nevertheless, to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for a wide range of people to engage in meaningful conversations, we prohibit certain conduct.

Each participant in our community is responsible for maintaining these standards.

In deciding whether someone has violated the rules, we will take into account things like https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018664574-Newsworthiness-considerations">newsworthiness, the context and nature of the posted information, the likelihood and severity of actual or potential harms, and applicable laws.

Violations of our rules may result in consequences such as account restrictions, limited distribution of your posts, and suspension of your account. We may limit the distribution of https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018182453">controversial or extreme content.

Threats of violence and incitement
We do not allow content or actions that threaten, encourage, or incite violence against anyone, directly or indirectly.

Hate speech
We do not allow content that promotes violence or hatred against people based on characteristics like race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, disease, age, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity.

We do not allow posts or accounts that glorify, celebrate, downplay, or trivialize violence, suffering, abuse, or deaths of individuals or groups. This includes the use of scientific or pseudoscientific claims to pathologize, dehumanize, or disempower others. We do not allow calls for intolerance, exclusion, or segregation based on protected characteristics, nor do we allow the glorification of groups which do any of the above.

We do not allow hateful text, images, symbols, or other content in your username, profile, or bio.

Harassment
Medium exists to share and discuss ideas. We don’t tolerate harassment, which includes:

  • Bullying, threatening, or shaming someone, or posting things likely to encourage others to do so
  • Using Medium features like responses, private notes, mentions, follows, story requests, or writer requests in a way intended to annoy or harass someone
  • Reviewing businesses or products in a gratuitously harmful or abusive manner

Privacy and Reputation
We do not allow the following:

  • Posting copies of private communications between private individuals without the explicit consent of all parties to the communication
  • Doxing, which includes not only private or obscure personal information but also the aggregation of publicly available information to target, shame, blackmail, harass, intimidate, threaten, or endanger
  • Posting intimate or explicit images taken or posted without the subject’s express consent
  • Content that violates others’ privacy, including sensitive or confidential information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, non-public phone numbers, physical addresses, email addresses, or other non-public information

Restricted categories
We do not allow posts or accounts that engage in the following restricted categories of activity:

  • Promotion of https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018182453">harmful conspiracies
  • Facilitation of gambling or betting
  • Facilitation of buying or selling social media interactions, including off-platform
  • Facilitation of illegal sexual services
  • Facilitation of copyright violation

Related conduct
We do not allow posts or accounts that engage in on-platform, off-platform, or cross-platform campaigns of targeting, harassment, hate speech, violence, or disinformation. We may consider off-platform actions in assessing a Medium account, and restrict access or availability to that account.

Spam
We do not allow spam on Medium. All spam will be immediately removed from Medium, without notification. While it is hard to define this content with precision or completeness, here are some representative behaviors we look for that are characteristic of spam:

  • Posting content primarily to drive traffic to, or increase the search rankings of, an external site, product, or service
  • Scraping and reposting content from other sources for the primary purpose of generating revenue or other personal gains
  • Posting duplicate content, whether from a single account or across multiple accounts
  • Stories where the content is clipped with the sole purpose of linking to the rest of the article on a different website
  • Performing a disproportionately large number of interactions, particularly by automated means. This includes bulk, indiscriminate interactions, such as following of other accounts (follow spam) clapping, highlighting, or leaving notes
  • Repeatedly using responses or other interactions as a method of promotion
  • Participating in bounty campaigns or brigades to artificially inflate rankings for posts, accounts, businesses, or products
  • Use or re-use content templates with slight modifications across multiple posts and accounts

For each of these behaviors, when we talk about “content,” we mean not only posts but also any other feature that allows you to add your own text or media. When we talk about “interactions,” we mean any feature that allows one user to interact with another, or with a post.

Paid, automatic, bulk, or non-genuine interactions
Medium depends on various user behaviors — like follows and claps — to determine what content to feature and make the site work well for everyone. So, we don’t allow artificial behaviors that skew this system and as a result degrade or distort other users’ experiences. This includes:

  • Buying, selling, or trading in accounts or account interactions — including follows, claps, highlights, responses or other traffic
  • Using services, apps, or arrangements that offer you more follows, claps, or other interactions on your Medium account or content
  • Registering accounts, posting content, or interacting with users or content automatically, systematically, or programmatically

Copyright and trademark infringement
Respect the copyrights and trademarks of others. Unless you’re authorized to use someone else’s copyrighted work or trademark (either expressly or by legal exceptions and limitations like fair use), don’t do it. We respond to notices of alleged infringement as described in our https://medium.com/policy/medium-terms-of-service-9db0094a1e0f">Terms of Service, https://medium.com/policy/mediums-copyright-and-dmca-policy-d126f73695">Copyright and DMCA Policy, and https://medium.com/policy/mediums-trademark-policy-e3bb53df59a7">Trademark Policy.

Deceptive conduct
We do not allow deceptive conduct on Medium. This includes:

  • Posting content or impersonating a person or organization in a way likely to deceive people. Parody and satire are fine, but make clear that is what you’re doing. Our https://medium.com/policy/medium-username-policy-7054a77fb04f">Username Policy has specific requirements for parody accounts
  • Using Medium for phishing or fraud. Don’t use tags, links, titles, or other metadata in a misleading way. Don’t link to or embed malicious or harmful code or software in your posts
  • Don’t use deception to generate revenue or traffic
  • If you have received compensation, free goods/services or anything of value in connection with the topic of a post, you must make this clear

Ads, Promotions, and Marketing

  • Third-party advertising and sponsorships are not allowed. You may not advertise or promote third-party products, services, or brands through Medium posts, publications, or letters. This includes images that indicate brand sponsorship in a post or letter, or as part of a publication name or logo.
  • Images functioning as third-party ads are not allowed. Inline images or embeds that link out and function as banner ads for third-party brands are not allowed.
  • You must disclose affiliate links or payment for a post. Affiliate links, such as link out to Amazon with your code, or any other link out where you will receive a commission or other value, are allowed in posts. But, you must disclose somewhere in the post that it includes affiliate links. If you have received payment, goods or services, or something else of value in exchange for writing a post, you must still disclose this fact in writing within your post (as per https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking">FTC Rules and Guides).
  • Multi-level marketing content is not allowed.

Embedded Content
In https://medium.com/policy/medium-privacy-policy-f03bf92035c9">ongoing compliance with the European GDPR, we are restricting the behavior of certain embedded content:

  • Embeds that directly collect data through form fields are not allowed. If you want to collect information from your readers, you will need to link out from your post on Medium to a form hosted elsewhere that makes it clear to a user that they are no longer in the Medium network

Cryptocurrency Accounts, Posts, and Publications
Posts and accounts that focus on cryptocurrencies which do not meet the following requirements may be considered spam and are subject to suspension, depending on context. Medium does not endorse or verify any coin, token, or similar announcement.

To prevent fraud and abuse, you must:

  • Include a link to your active project domain in your user account bio.
  • Use an email address from that domain as your verified Medium account email, and maintain that email account actively.
  • Link at least one consistently-branded social media account (Facebook or Twitter) to your Medium account. That social account should also link out prominently to the same domain as is included in your Medium user bio.
  • Include a prominent about page with up-to-date contact information on your project website.

You may not:

  • Use an anonymous email address which is not linked to your project domain. (e.g., gmail, protonmail, mail.ru, etc.)
  • Advertise or participate in bounty campaigns, pump and dumps, reviewing for reward, or other forms of brigading or inauthentic activity.
  • Include shortened URLs in your posts.

Graphic content
We do not allow pornographic images or videos. We do allow erotic writing and non-graphic erotic images.

Where applicable, we will work to limit legally-ordered content restrictions to jurisdictions where we have a good faith belief that we are legally required to restrict the content. Medium submits to the https://www.lumendatabase.org/">Lumen database government requests to restrict access to content (redacted where appropriate to protect privacy or prevent harm to a person).

We may enforce, or not enforce, these policies at our sole discretion. These policies don’t create a duty or contractual obligation for us to act.

Member Content Guidelines
To be eligible for inclusion and potential monetization from https://medium.com/membership">member-only content, user posts must meet all Medium rules as well as the following content requirements. • You may not sell advertising in or on your member-only content.
  • Member stories should not exist with the predominant purpose of driving traffic to an external website, business, or product. All included content must be relevant, substantial and informative.
  • If you have received compensation, free goods/services, or anything of value in connection with the topic of a post, you must make this clear.
  • Do not ask for claps or include other calls to action, including gifs of clapping, requests for donations, or other links or embeds for the purpose of capturing user information or soliciting money.
  • Do not use content or images licensed as non-commercial in your Partner Program posts.

If you violate these Member content rules
Medium reserves the right to review posts or accounts at any time and stop payment for any post or to any account, and/or remove from the Member section content that violates these Member Content Guidelines, or Medium’s general rules. In deciding whether something has violated the Rules and Guidelines, we will take into account things like the context, newsworthiness, and nature of the posted information and applicable privacy laws. Repeated violations of the Rules and Requirements will result in permanent ineligibility to participate in the program.

How to report a Member post violation
If you find a member post or account on Medium that violates these rules, please https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/214098258-Report-posts-users">flag it. Today, we are updating our rules to help strengthen our community.

As the internet has evolved in the five years since we launched, so has the way people use Medium. To accommodate this, we regularly assess our rules, and adjust them accordingly.

We strive to be a place where everyone is welcome to share, read, and engage with the stories that matter to them. When we see abuse of this system, we act quickly and fairly to take appropriate action. Where our policies fail, we carefully analyze and update them.

Beyond Medium itself, we recognize that we are also part of the larger internet ecosystem. Just as we rely on outside technology, systems, and information to run Medium, we also consider off-platform signals when assessing potential rules violations.

We have all seen an increase and evolution of online hate, abuse, harassment, and disinformation, along with ever-evolving campaigns of fraud and spam. To continue to be good citizens of the internet, and provide our users with a trusted and safe environment to read, write, and share new ideas, we have strengthened our policies around this type of behavior.

One of the most critical signals we rely on in maintaining a high standard of quality is you, our community of readers, authors, and thinkers. We appreciate your many contributions to making Medium a better platform.

If you find content you believe violates our rules, please flag it for our Trust and Safety team to review, or https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=160277">email us with more information.

You can read our updated rules https://medium.com/policy/medium-rules-30e5502c4eb4">here.

10–10–17 UPDATE: The Medium Partner Program is now open to everyone. Join the program https://medium.com/creators">here.

Today we’re launching the first step of an exciting new phase at Medium.

We strongly believe that quality content needs to be paid for by consumers — not advertisers — so creators can do their best work, and to align the incentives of everyone involved. So, since March, we’ve been experimenting with our subscription paywall and putting more and more great stories behind it. But that’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of fantastic stories published on Medium every day. And, though Medium is an open publishing platform, we haven’t enabled a way for most of our writers to participate in the economics.

Until now.

Starting today, we are sending a small group of writers and publications on Medium our first batch of invitations to our updated Partner Program. We’ll be sending more over time, and you can learn how to get on the invite list at the end of this post. But first, some details.

https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*ck3e50g-5JCAKK1zZZx_Kw.png" />

When you join the program, you will have the option to publish your story to Medium members only and get paid based on engagement. Your content will still be distributed to your followers, discoverable through search, the Medium home page, and our apps. Note: We have recently switched our paywall from “no access” to a “metered” one, meaning non-members will still be able to read a limited amount of locked stories each month.

How does this all work?

For the creators in the program, each month you will be paid based on the level of engagement your stories get from Medium members. Essentially, we look at the engagement of each individual member (claps being the primary signal) and allocate their monthly subscription fee based on that engagement. This is one of the reasons https://blog.medium.com/show-authors-more-%EF%B8%8F-with-s-c1652279ba01">we love Claps — it helps us measure the depth of appreciation that a member has for each individual post. (For our members, we’re excited to give you more meaningful control over the stories you support. The more claps you give a locked post, the more share of your membership fee that author will get.)

We can’t wait to see the new opportunities the Partner Program creates for writers. But we also recognize that not everyone has the same set of goals when they write on Medium. If you are not interested in making money from your work, nothing changes: Medium remains free and open. You can create an account, write directly on Medium, publish your work, and share it broadly…all for free.

These are just the early days of what we consider a grand experiment. Imagine a day when anyone with the skills and willingness to put in the effort can write something useful, insightful, or moving and be compensated based on its value to others. There is a lot we need to figure out to make this work right. But we are convinced that by joining forces, we can make a new economic model for quality content. We hope you’ll join us in this experiment.

https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/251/1*ZG8TBIFbd0grFa-D-7E6oQ.gif" />

If you are interested and did not get one of the first invitations, don’t worry — more are coming soon. To make sure you’re on the list please join the http://medium.com/me/partner/enroll">Partner Program waitlist. Effective as of July 5th, 2018

These terms (the “Partner Program Terms”) govern A Medium Corporation’s (“Medium”) partner program (“Partner Program”). Through Medium’s Partner Program, you can put a post from your user account behind Medium’s paywall (“locking” a post) and receive revenue based on its performance among Medium Members.

By participating in the Partner Program, you agree to these Partner Program Terms, as well as Medium’s https://medium.com/policy/medium-terms-of-service-9db0094a1e0f">Terms of Service, https://medium.com/policy/medium-privacy-policy-f03bf92035c9">Privacy Policy, https://medium.com/policy/medium-rules-30e5502c4eb4">Rules, and Partner Program Guidelines, and all other terms and conditions that generally apply to the Medium website and mobile applications (all of these together are the “Terms”).

Please read the Partner Program Terms carefully. If you don’t understand them, or don’t accept any part of them, then you can’t participate in the Partner Program. Your online acceptance of Medium’s Terms form a binding agreement between you and Medium and show your intent to be bound by them.

Locked Posts & Monetization

User posts

For each locked post associated with your account, you have the chance to receive revenue based on various performance factors, including reader engagement. Based on the performance of a post, Medium will pay you a portion of revenues received by Medium from subscription fees, as determined by Medium. Medium will send you payment for any revenues accrued during a given calendar month by sending payment after that month. Medium reserves the right to adjust at any time the factors by which post performance and revenue are determined.

User Posts & Medium Publications

A locked post may be included in a Medium publication. The writer chooses whether to lock a post and will receive the same amount of funds through the Partner Program regardless of whether the post is included in a publication. A publication will not receive any funds from the Partnership Program based on the performance of a locked post in that publication. As with any post, either the writer or the publication owner or editors may choose to remove a locked post from a publication at any time.

The above arrangement may be modified on a case-by-case basis, such as for publications operating on Medium that commission or own their content. For any such publication planning to receive proceeds from a post’s performance, this arrangement must be made clear to any writer potentially affected and agreed upon in advance with a given post’s writer.

Necessary Rights

You may only lock a post (i.e., place it behind Medium’s paywall) if you have sufficient rights to make commercial use of the content in it, including text, video, and audio elements. Medium may require you to provide documentation proving you own sufficient rights to lock a post.

The consequences of locking posts when you lack the rights to do so or failing to provide adequate documentation upon request include the unlocking of posts, withholding of revenue, suspension or termination from the Partner Program, and suspension or termination of your Medium account.

You are not entitled to earn or receive any revenue in connection with your content in any of the following circumstances: (1) if one or more third parties claim rights to any element(s) of your content, (2) if monetization is disabled by Medium for a post, or (3) if your participation in the Medium Partner Program is suspended or terminated. If any of these occur, Medium will use reasonable efforts to notify you.

These Partner Terms are not legal advice. If you plan to lock and monetize a post containing any content you did not create, you may want to talk to a lawyer first to ensure you own all rights required to do so.

Termination

Medium reserves the right to unlock a post at any time, which will end that post’s ability to generate revenue. Medium reserves the right in its sole discretion to terminate your participation in the Partner Program at any time.

Account and Payment Method Requirement

In order to accrue or receive payment of any revenues under the Partner Program, you must have at all times an active Medium account and a bank account associated with it. Medium does not owe you for any revenues that may be associated with your content during any period in which you do not have a valid account or payment method.

Changes or Discontinuation of Partner Program

Medium reserves the right to modify, suspend or discontinue the Partner Program with or without notice to you. Medium will not be liable to you or any third party for any such modification, suspension, or termination. Medium may change these Partner Program Terms from time to time so we encourage you to periodically review this page for most up-to-date version. If you refuse to accept the updated Partner Program Service Terms then Medium reserves its right to suspend or terminate your participation in the Partner Program.

Communications

By using the Partner Program, you consent to receiving communications from us related to it, including marketing communications such as newsletters, special offers, promotional announcements, and customer surveys, to your registered email address or via other methods.

Taxes

If required by law, you are responsible for reporting and paying any applicable taxes in connection with your participation in the Partner Program. Such taxes may include duties, customs fees, or other taxes (other than income tax), along with any related penalties or interest.

Governing Law & Forum

The governing law, mandatory forum, and dispute resolution provisions of Medium’s Terms of Service also apply to these Partner Program Terms and any dispute arising under them.

Miscellaneous

You participate in the Partner Program at your own risk. You agree that you are solely responsible for your actions in connection with the Partner Program, any breach of your obligations under the Partner Program Terms, and for the consequences of any such breach.

Any capitalized terms used but not defined in these Partner Program Terms have the meanings given to them in Medium’s Terms of Service. Except as modified by these Terms, Medium’s Terms of Service remain in effect. Medium’s right to modify or revise the Terms of Service also applies to these Partner Program Terms.

Se·ries

/ˈsirēz/

noun

A new type of story built for continuity.

We’re building a different way to tell stories.

Now stories can be told over time, bit by bit, building on things as they happen.

And we’ll always save your place in a series, so it’s easy to come back and pick up right where you left off.

Show some love

At the end of each series, give the author as many claps as you want to show appreciation. You’ll be rewarded with a few easter eggs if you’re… particularly enthusiastic.

👏🏻 👏🏼 👏🏽 👏🏾 👏🏿

Get updates

Finished a series and can’t wait for the next installment?

Tap “Get updates” at the end and we’ll send you a push notification when the series gets updated with the next installment. You never have to worry about missing a thing.

Since we introduced Series , we’ve loved watching writers unleash their creativity…

Up until now, you’ve only been able to create text and image cards.

But, we built Series to be a more immersive way to tell stories on Medium, so today we’re excited to introduce a missing piece…

Adding video to series

When you add a new card to your series, just tap the image icon and choose a video from your iOS camera roll or take a new one. Make sure the green progress bar completes, which tells you that your video has uploaded to your series. Then, when you’ve added everything you wanted to your series, hit publish.

Adding video to your series is a great way to help readers visualize an experience you’re having, showcase an event you’re describing, or make an update feel more personal.

We’ve been putting our https://blog.medium.com/the-medium-model-3ec28c6f603a">energy at Medium into improving quality — hosting more thoughtful and carefully written content, and improving the reading experience. We want to eliminate distractions that get in the way of reading flow and reduce distortions that could undermine your trust in what you read on Medium.

To that end, we‘re adjusting our policies related to commercial content.

Ads, Promotions, and Marketing

First, we’ll be restricting some kinds of commercial activity that have been allowed in the past, such as sponsorships and links that are mainly promotional. Medium’s business has been ad-free for more than a year now. But some “ad-like” remnants that had value in the past are now less aligned with Medium’s model of using subscriptions and a metered paywall to provide the best quality user experience. This means eliminating certain features that are superficially free, but for which you pay with attention.

So, as of September 1, 2018, our policies will include:

  • First-party promotion is allowed. You can promote your own work or goods and services you provide, like a link to your website or your book. For posts or publications run by a company (like company blogs), you can promote goods or services provided by your company.
Inline images or embeds that link out and function as banner ads for third-party brands will no longer be allowed.
  • You must disclose affiliate links or payment for a post. Affiliate links, such as link out to Amazon with your code, or any other link out where you will receive a commission or other value, are allowed in posts. But, you must disclose somewhere in the post that it includes affiliate links. If you have received payment, goods or services, or something else of value in exchange for writing a post, you must still disclose this fact in writing within your post (as https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking">FTC Rules and Guides, and https://medium.com/policy/medium-rules-30e5502c4eb4">Medium Rules require).

Embedded Content

Second, in preparing to comply with GDPR (the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation), it led us to step back, take a fresh look at our privacy practices, and renew our efforts to make Medium trustworthy. It raised questions about what types of data collection we should and should not allow through Medium. And in other cases, it led us to think about how to channel third-party data collection on Medium to make sure our users understand as clearly as possible what information about them is captured, by whom, where it winds up, and how it might be used.

As of September 1, 2018:

  • Embeds that directly collect data through form fields will no longer be allowed.

This includes embeds that facilitate the submission of email addresses and other personally identifying information through forms (such as Upscribe or Rabbut) and the submission of credit card information (such as Gumroad). We understand that this might make life harder for writers and publications who want to collect information directly from users. But, we believe this change is necessary to ensure that Medium readers know where their data is going and how it will be used.

Going forward, if you want to collect information from your users, you will need to link out from your post on Medium to a form hosted elsewhere that makes it clear to a user that they are no longer in the Medium network. We are working with Upscribe, Rabbut, and Gumroad so that their services function in line with these Medium policies.

We will continue to allow embeds that display content, such as YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, GitHub, and others, as explained in our https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/214981378-Embeds">Help Center. Our https://medium.com/policy/medium-privacy-policy-f03bf92035c9">Privacy Policy discusses in more detail how we treat this type of embed.

Thank you. We’re grateful for your continued use of Medium and appreciate your working with us to make Medium a place for thoughtful, high-quality stories.

Medium Branding Guidelines

These few simple rules will help you use our branding elements to communicate the Medium brand most effectively. https://medium.design/r/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FMedium%2Fmedium-logos%2Farchive%2Fmaster.zip">Download all assets

Wordmark

The Medium wordmark is an important expression of our brand identity. It should in no way be distorted or redrawn when applied to communications. Because the wordmark is such a recognizable and highly visible brand asset, it is vital that it is always applied consistently.

Wordmark. Minimum digital size: 20 pixels (height)

Monogram

Our monogram is the reduced form of our wordmark. It should only be used when the wordmark is too small to achieve maximum impact.

Clearspace and Positioning

The wordmark should always be surrounded by generous white space. The diagram below defines the minimum amount of clear space needed, which is based on the x-height in the wordmark.

Color

Primary Usage: our wordmark is primarily used in black. It can sit on top of the light green or white background. It can also be used in white over black.

Discretionary Usage: in rare cases where there is already a strong presence of our light green color, the wordmark may be used on top of a color from our secondary palette.

Incorrect Color Usage: our wordmark should never be used in white on top of any light colors. Additionally it shouldn’t be used with our dark colors, neither coloring it with a dark color, or using our primary black over a dark background.

Dont’s

The examples shown here illustrate incorrect uses of the wordmark.

Effective as of June 22, 2017

A Medium Corporation (“Medium”) allows you to access certain premium features or content in exchange for a one-time or recurring fee, as applicable (the “Member Services”). Your transactions and any other use of the Member Services are subject to these Medium Membership Terms of Service (“Membership Terms of Service”). By using a Member Service, you agree to (1) these Membership Terms of Service; and (2) Medium’s https://medium.com/@Medium/subscription-terms-of-service-cc7f8e165178">Terms of Service, https://medium.com/policy/medium-privacy-policy-f03bf92035c9">Privacy Policy, and https://medium.com/policy/medium-rules-30e5502c4eb4">Rules, and all other terms and conditions that generally apply to the Medium website (all of these together are the “Terms”). Please read the Terms carefully. If you don’t understand them, or don’t accept any part of them, then you’re not allowed to use the Member Services.

Fees. Subscription fees for the Member Services are recurring payments (except where identified as otherwise). The term may be monthly or annual, as described in the course the of transaction. Your subscription begins upon payment of a first installment of subscription fees. The subscription renews monthly or annually as applicable upon the payment of automatically recurring subscription fees. Monthly or annual fees are charged on the same day of the month that the subscription began. (For example, if a monthly subscription began on the 29th, 30th, or 31st day of a month, then membership will renew on the last day of any month that doesn’t have that many days.)

Payment. Medium accepts payment via the current payment method indicated at time of purchase, which may include credit card, Apple Pay, and any other form of payment that we make available to you from time to time. You agree to abide by any relevant Terms of Service or other legal agreement whether with Medium, Apple, Stripe, Google, PayPal or another third party, that governs your use of a given payment processing method. Prices for Member Services may change at any time, and Medium does not provide price protection or refunds in the event of a price reduction or promotional offering. You agree to pay for any Member Services that you order (except during a free trial period). Medium will charge your credit card or other form of payment for the price listed on the relevant Member Services offer, along with any additional amounts relating to applicable taxes, bank fees and currency fluctuations. If you purchase any automatically renewing subscriptions, you agree that Medium will charge the payment method on file on the first day of each billing period for the relevant subscription, and if the payment method on file becomes invalid due to an expired credit card or other similar reason and we are unable to charge you on the next billing period, Medium reserves the right to immediately revoke your access to any Member Services you have ordered until you update your payment method. If you fail to update your payment method within a reasonable amount of time, Medium may cancel your subscription.

Taxes. If Medium is required to collect or pay any taxes in connection with your purchase of Member Services, such taxes will be charged to you at the time of each purchase transaction or other appropriate time as applicable. Additionally, if required by law, you are responsible for reporting and paying certain taxes in connection with your purchase and use of Member Services. Such taxes may include duties, customs fees, or other taxes (other than income tax), along with any related penalties or interest, as applicable to your purchase or country of purchase.

Cancellations and Refunds. You can cancel your Member Services at any time. If you purchase a subscription to Member Services that automatically renews, you may cancel the subscription any time before the end of the current billing period and the cancellation will take effect on the next billing period, except as otherwise communicated to you by Medium. You will retain access to the Member Services from the time you cancel until the start of the next billing period, and will not receive a refund or credit for any remaining days in your current billing period. Subscription fees paid are final and nonrefundable, unless otherwise determined by the Medium. If Medium reasonably determines that a user has violated these Membership Terms of Services, Medium may immediately terminate the subscription and the user’s access to Member Services without notice and without refund. Refund requests should be directed to yourfriends@medium.com.

Free Trials. Medium may offer free trials to new Member Service subscribers. If you initiate a subscription to Member Services through a free trial offer, you will receive free access to such Member Services for the duration of the free trial period. At the end of the applicable free trial period, you will be charged the price of the subscription and will continue to be charged until you cancel your subscription. To avoid any charges, you must cancel before the end of the free trial period.

License. Your use of the Member Services must be only for personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to use any Member Service, in whole or in part in connection with any public presentation even if no fee is charged (except where such use would not constitute a copyright infringement). You are receiving a non-exclusive license to access the Member Services and all rights, title and interest in the Member Services (including any content offered through the Member Services) not expressly granted to you in these Terms are reserved by Medium and its licensors. If Medium reasonably determines that you violated any part of the Membership Terms of Service, your rights under this Section will immediately terminate and Medium may terminate your access to the Member Services and/or your Medium account without notice and without refund to you.

Restrictions. When you use the Member Services, you may not (or attempt to):

  • use any part of the Member Services in an illegal manner or for an illegal purpose;
  • share your Medium account password with someone else to allow them to access any part of the Member Services that such person did not order;

  • present any false, inaccurate or misleading information in an effort to misrepresent your location or place of residence, and you will not attempt to circumvent any restrictions on access to or availability of the Member Services or content available within the Member Services.

Changes or Discontinuation of Member Services. Medium reserves the right to change the availability of Member Services. In addition, we reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any Member Service with or without notice to you and we will not be liable to you or any third party for any such modifications, suspension, or termination.

Removal or Unavailability of Content. In certain cases, content available within a Member Service may become unavailable due to restrictions from our licensors or other legal or policy reasons. Medium will have no liability to you for any such unavailability.

Changes to the Membership Terms of Service. We may change these Membership Terms of Service from time to time so we encourage you to periodically review the most up-to-date version at https://medium.com/policy/paid-terms-of-service-cc7f8e165178">https://medium.com/policy/paid-terms-of-service-cc7f8e165178https://medium.com/@Medium/subscription-terms-of-service-cc7f8e165178.">. If you refuse to accept the updated Membership Terms of Service then Medium reserves its right to discontinue your use of the Member Services.
