To better understand the consequences of bringing back a former CEO, MIT Sloan collected and analyzed data on the performance of 167 boomerang CEOs of companies listed on the S&P Composite 1500 index from 1992 to 2017. They then compared their tenures with those of more than 6,000 other (non-boomerang) CEOs over the same period. This comparative investigation revealed some non-obvious insights and critical implications for leaders of large and small organizations. https://bit.ly/2G11UPt #ceo #csuite

Ask executives to list traits of great leaders and they will probably name vision, honesty, or the ability to execute change. Rarely mentioned is one critical capability that leaders need most in turbulent times: sensemaking, the ability to create and update maps of a complex environment in order to act more effectively in it. Sensemaking involves pulling together disparate views to create a plausible understanding of the complexity around us and then testing that understanding to refine it or, if necessary, abandon it and start over. Sensemaking has been recognized as vital to the success and survival of organizations since Karl Weick introduced the term in 1979. It is considered essential for innovation and crucial to the development of nimble teams and organizations. Leaders need to know what’s happening around them in order to drive organizations forward. Today this task is harder than ever, given the ever-increasing rate of change in technology, business models, and consumer tastes — and it is now further complicated by the global pandemic and its related economic and political aftershocks. https://lnkd.in/gtm7uGS #leadership

To navigate uncertainty and ambiguity, leaders need to be confident—but too much self-confidence can narrow their peripheral vision. As counterintuitive as it may seem, vulnerability is actually a leadership strength for leaders when we know that tomorrow’s answers won’t be found in the corner office. https://lnkd.in/eH-k4rJ #leadershipdevelopment #leadership #leaders

Two key factors are greatly influencing pandemic responses and outcomes across the globe: culture and leadership style. As businesses begin to reopen and return to “normal” operations, it’s vital they understand the roles that culture and leadership play in doing so seamlessly and effectively. https://lnkd.in/guEwmgc #leadership
