Planters Peanuts killed its iconic Mr. Peanut character a few weeks ago and planned his funeral as its Super Bowl commercial. If you didn’t catch what happened, Mr. Peanut has a car crash and then sacrifices himself, so his friends can live. That idea is now backfiring with the recent death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and eight other victims that died in a helicopter crash. Most businesses are currently in the thick of planning for 2020 and with that comes a host of challenges not only about direction and strategy, but challenges on a more personal level. Expectations of consumers have dramatically changed over the years. Consumers now expect brands to take a stand on social and political issues. Research conducted by Edelman shows two-thirds of consumers now buy a product or boycott a brand based solely on its position on issues. A few weeks ago, I received an unsolicited email and phone call from a communications service provider asking if I would be interested in learning more about what they do and what they could do for my agency. I was, so I emailed them back and then when I didn’t hear from them, I called and left a message with the person who had originally called me. I’m still waiting to hear from them. I’ve grown accustomed to brands taking old ideas, polishing them off and introducing them as new. I’m also used to seeing them copy anything that’s creating buzz instead of trying to create something original.
