Inspire empathy for nature’s creatures with this fun craft that invites the birds over for a visit.  You probably already even have these items around your house! Show your child the materials and ask how they may be used to help the birds feel at home. After making this simple DIY birdfeeder, be sure to hang it by the window, so you and your child can enjoy keeping track of who stops by!

Materials:
- Empty egg carton
- Pencil
- String
- Bird seed

Directions:
- Cut carton in half so you only have 6 compartments
- Poke holes through egg carton to place string
- Add string
- Tie a knot
- Add birdseed
- Hang from tree

Feel the holiday spirit with this snack! Magical Reindeer Chow will have your taste buds dancing and your child's mind wildly anticipating Christmas Day.

Ingredients: 

- 2 cups white chocolate chips
- 3 cups Rice Chex
- 1 cup miniature marshmallows
- 1 cup thin pretzels
- 3/4 cup M&Ms (divided)
- 1/2 cup raisins (or dried cranberries)
- 2 tablespoons gold sprinkles
- Optional: 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- Optional: 1/2 cup salted nuts

Instructions:

- Gather the ingredients.
- Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and set aside.
- Place the white chocolate chips and coconut oil, if using, in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until melted, stirring after every 45 seconds to prevent the white chocolate from overheating.
- Add the Chex, marshmallows, pretzels, 1/2 cup of the M&Ms, nuts, and the raisins to the white chocolate, and stir until everything is completely coated with a thin layer of white chocolate.
- Scrape the candy out onto the prepared baking sheet and smooth it into a thin layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of M&Ms on top and press down gently to adhere them. Adding some candies on top keeps them from being coated in white chocolate and gives your reindeer chow a pop of bright color. If you’re using edible glitter or sprinkles, dust that all over the top of the candy.
- Refrigerate the reindeer chow for at least 20 minutes to set the white chocolate.
- Once set, break it into small pieces to serve.
The reindeer chow can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

As children grow, they like to be part of the giving aspect of the holidays. Homemade cards and crafts will warm Grandma's heart much more than any store bought trinket ever could! Encourage your children to use their gifts of creativity to spread holiday cheer this holiday season.

Sail away with this DIY cork boat!

This is a DIY craft that will transport an ordinary day into an afternoon of fun and adventure!  And there are plenty of ways to help develop your child’s finger and hand strength with cutting, stretching, drawing and more.  Then set sail on an adventure of the imagination that your child will surely want to share with a friend.

Materials:

3 wine corks
2 thick rubber bands
Toothpicks
Craft foam sheet
Scissors
Hot glue (optional)
Directions:

1. Rubber band together 3 corks turned sideways. (use hot glue to reinforce)
2. Cut craft foam sheet into a triangle for the sail. Decorate as you desire.
3. Use tooth pick and poke a hole at the top and through the bottom of the sail.
4. Stick tooth pick into the middle cork.
5. See how well your cork-boat floats.
 

Literacy Connection:  Continue the theme of nice manners by highlighting the beauty of sharing with Llama Llama Time to Share by Anna Dewdney.  The lesson of struggling to share a beloved item is simple when the theme rhymes with share, and that is… learning to care!  Sometimes learning that sharing when you are ready can be the most fun.
