Levels of Communication

Levels of Conversation Small Talk – you know this – boring – mundane – predictable:We use small talk more than any other form of communication. It is very basic, surface-level discussion with little disclosure and lacking emotional content. This is appropriate in any type of relationship. Sharing Facts or Resources – focused, less predictable:This type of communication is also very surface-level and focused on a specific issue or concern. Again, no emotional content or personal disclosure. Also appropriate for any type of relationship.
Viewpoints and Opinions – riskier depending on your relationship:In this type of communication, you share more personal thoughts, but not emotional or intimate information. Sharing opinions and views involves more skill than the previous types of communication as it requires forethought and the ability to make a point in a way that doesn’t raise the defenses of others. This type of communication is safe to use with most people, though tread lightly on controversial topics. Personal Feelings – sharing emotions or personal thoughts:The important thing about sharing your personal thoughts and feelings is knowing with whom and when it is safe to do so. Discretion and boundaries are key. Go slow and follow the lead of the other person. There should be very little of this with people at work and rarely with strangers. How We Say Things Makes a Big Difference in the Response We Get

How we say things makes a big difference in the response we get. Psychology literature says we’re not responsible for another person’s reactions and that nobody can cause us to react or feel a certain way. Yes and No Yes, we must take control of and responsibility for our own emotions and behavior. We all have hot buttons and soft spots that make us more likely to react to certain things. The good news is we can learn how to control those reactions – or at least regulate them. We may know of people and issues that can easily cause a negative or over-the-top reaction. Having that awareness, we can think ahead about how we want to respond and come up with something that works better than when we are caught off guard. No – or not completely. Some people are jerks or trolls in the online vernacular. There’s no avoiding that fact. They may try to provoke a reaction by saying and doing things that they know will send people into orbit. If we can learn to change our reactions, they may stop. Why continue if it isn’t working anymore? You may have heard the saying, “They know how to push my buttons because they installed them.” This is about patterns of behavior and interactions that bring up an automatic, knee-jerk reaction. It happens before we have a chance to think about it, take a deep breath, or count to ten. In those situations, with awareness, preparation and practice, we may be able to stop or turn down the reaction. Sometimes people push our buttons intentionally, but most are acting without thinking. The dance between certain people happens outside conscious thought – old patterns that repeat themselves. You may have more control than you realize! Keep in touch with our blogs and we will walk you through some amazing techniques. For an in-depth look into personal communication skills, sign up for a chat with our CEO here.

Does Ancient Art Tell Us Anything About Digital Communication?

The importance of art in a digital media environment. The Egyptian book of the dead depicts Egyptian gods and hieroglyphic symbols that convey beliefs about the afterlife. This conjunction of images and symbolic text was immensely powerful for communication in ancient societies and continues to dominate the mediated world of digital communication. Scrolling any media app presents you with a mixture of images and symbolic logos that represents complex ideas and messages. The artifacts of society today convey in-depth information about us, our experiences, and our values as a society. Symbolic representation has been a fundamental aspect of humanity for millenniums. Paleolithic cave depictions of animals and hunting reveal that humans have always been replicating and conveying their experiences. At the basis of all art, the human experience is expressed in one form or another. The arts, which can be boundless to time, culture, and language transcend boundaries of communication. The symbols expressed during the Paleolithic period still convey messages to generations now. The number of visual images I encounter throughout a singular day is incomprehensible and inescapable. For most of us living in this digital media environment, the bombardment of content has become normalized. Between those addictively cycling social media apps on phones, working via computer screens, ubiquitous logo placement, and plentiful streaming services – there is obviously no lack for images. However, with this overload of content, it is common for messages to be overlooked and lost in the vast flow of information. People tend to skim over large bodies of text if they even read it at all. In an information-centric society, quick and novel visual communication is the most efficient way to engage with an audience and break through unconscious scrolling. Symbolic indicators have the ability to represent and relay larger concepts. In ancient times, there were limitations around the methods in which ideas could be conveyed. Carving pictures into stone was a consuming craft and meant there was a high level of care and necessity put into what was created. From artifacts of ancient Mesopotamia to Andy Warhol’s revolutionary influence on contemporary art, it is undeniable that art communicates. Visual images and symbols are powerful as they relay messages. It is the act of creating that differentiates humanity from all other species. As a thought experiment, imagine a future time when an archeologist and art curators examine vintage Apple Inc. products and designs. What do these products and the applications reveal about humanity? Perhaps the power of all these images is greater than anyone realizes at this moment in time. The impact of all these images is not yet understood.

What is Narrative and Why is It Important?

Narrative, in its simplest definition, is a story. We all tell bits and pieces of our story every day, from social media posts to telling others how bad traffic was ‘on the way over’ or what our child did that made us laugh… or late! Narrative is also a way of presenting a story, a […]

Business… As it Should Be – The Great Covid-19 Reset

Whether your business is large, small, essential, struggling to ‘stay open’ from home or ’hoping to restart when this is over’, there are some realizations that we think most CEOs and business owners should be making as we struggle with the realities of a global pandemic and shut-down. This period in history is tragic and destructive, personally and universally, but when historians speak of it someday, it can also prove to be a time of great, positive change. It can be an opportunity to reflect on what we have done wrong, what we have lost… what is truly important and meaningful. As business leaders, when this is ‘over’ and our businesses get to, what will inevitably be, a new normal, we are going to have to accept some much needed changes. We’re not talking about a list of government-mandated requirements, restrictions and operating procedures, though these will certainly be plenty, and probably in flux for some time to come. This isn’t about ‘how will I meet these OSHA mandates’ or ‘how can I make all my cubicles six feet apart.’ We’re talking about philosophical change, systemic change… a new way of thinking about doing business, of all types, in all industries and regions. We’re talking about making our business people focused, no matter our product, service or business model. Our philosophy can no longer be “it’s just business”, not that it ever should have been. People will be putting so much more on the line to walk through our doors and be our employees, our customers and our clients now. We must figure out how to build and keep their faith and trust; that their health and safety… their very lives are more important than a bottom line. Our changes will need to be self-proscribed, business culture changes, from the CEO down. These changes will include learning new ways to interact with each other while understanding we will all have a new set of needs, both personal and professional. We must learn to accept, adapt and take action on those needs while still operating a successful business. It may help us to recognize there are no longer their needs but there are now our needs, and see if we can factor this new reality into our business operations. When we are successful, our businesses and our country will be stronger . If we learn anything from this time, it should be how to reset how we can operate capitalism, profitably, successfully and with a new understanding of how our economy can actually be a function of our humanity.
