I get questions every day about helping businesses turn digital marketing into growth. The problem is people are asking the wrong questions. If you want to succeed with paid media, it comes down to a few simple things that are very hard to pull off. 1. You need to think like an investor and get out of this marketing mindset. Investors look at the long term and know that not everything is going to work today. That means tracking and measuring everything and making decisions based on the data. Billion-dollar businesses exist because they can utilize data to make intelligent decisions. 2. You need to understand that digital marketing is like playing in the Olympics of business. You are going head to head with the best marketers on the planet. Because the operating environment is so dynamic, your marketing needs to adjust in real time to keep you on the right track. 3. Be committed and ready to fight. When you move into a market don’t expect the competition to just lay down and give you their customers. You will need to be ready to fight for every single sale. The traffic is not working One of the biggest problems advertisers face is what to do when paid ads don’t work. That’s something that happens in every campaign and your ability to diagnose and fix it is critical to your success. Before we dive into today’s email, I need to be totally honest with you. Paid ads will only amplify your content. If your landing and sales pages don’t convert, no amount of traffic will fix it. That is a conversion problem, and most product owners don’t know their own conversion with organic traffic. Throwing the highest quality paid traffic at a low converting page will not fix the problem. With Facebook and Google’s AI and machine learning being so advanced, when you get a click you can count on it being a decent click. Here I will share with you my method for diagnosing and fixing problems based on knowing who your best buyers are. If you don’t have a proven track record of being able to convert cold traffic into buyers, that’s an entirely different problem. No one is clicking your ads. The problem is the ad and the angle of the ad is bad. The lead-in in the first few sentences does not have any intrigue or gives away that you are selling something before you build up the desire. You don’t sell the value of clicking through to the landing page. The headline is weak. These are easy to fix and everything can be adjusted with better ads. You get clicks to your landing page, but they don’t convert. This happens when your ads are not congruent with your landing page. Maybe you updated the ads but didn’t update the landing page. -Is the page loading fast on desktop and mobile? -Is the Call To Action above the fold? -Is your copy weak and does it not sell what the value is for the user to continue? – Is your form working? This can be easily diagnosed using a tool like HotJar that will allow you to record the screen and find out what’s happening. They opt-in but don’t take action. This means your offer is weak. -You don’t hit the hot buttons of your prospects. -You don’t build up the value enough to make them take action. -Is your buy button on the next step working on mobile and desktop? -This is easy to fix with some copywriting and value proposition work. But here is the problem. Every business owner thinks their offer will convert and all they need is traffic. Traffic only amplifies what’s already there; it’s not a magic bullet that can fix everything that is broken. With all the recent updates with IOS 14 and Google getting ready to do the same thing, the big question is do Facebook ads still work? You might like this answer, but it depends. In the past with a decent ad and enough pixel data, Facebook could turn out some crazy ROI. But that’s gone. Now Facebook is relying on the creative to do most of the work. That means descriptions, images, headlines, etc. need to pull their weight. That is where the breakdown is happening. The ads I see running in my newsfeed don’t have copy strong enough to even get me to click. I’m a hyper-clicker, so you know it’s a problem. And that’s not all. Facebook’s growth is declining. The number of app downloads on the Apple and Google play store have been steadily falling for over 12 months. Clubhouse, TikTok, and a slew of other apps are eating away the audience. ABC, CBS, and NBC were once the only TV channels, but now there are hundreds of channels segmented by niche. We are now seeing the same type of fragmentation happening to digital media. So yes, Facebook ads still work, but you need to be more creative. Plus, now is the time to start testing out other marketing channels. AT&T announced Monday that it will merge its WarnerMedia with Discovery Inc creating the #1 player in ad-supported premium video in the US. This is causing Facebook to freak out because this new competitor is aiming to take away market share. While we don’t know the impact of this merger over the long run, we do know that Facebook is struggling to find ad space. Three years ago they bet everything on Facebook video. They wanted to go head to head with YouTube, and so far it is not working. Now throw in the AT&T and Discovery merger, and things have gone from OK to bad very quickly. That has the to be the longest subject line I have ever sent. But what does name dropping ad networks have to do with a hill of beans? Simple, all of these will provide you with crazy, server-melting traffic if you know how to do one thing. Can you write ads that convert someone who is “just looking” into a clicker? That is the problem. You need to think of the person on the other side of the screen reading your ad. What can you do to reach through the screen and hit them with a lightning bolt of inspiration that makes them want to click your ad? How can you shock the most zombie-like searchers into hot prospects who are ready to buy? Here is a million dollar tip. Perform a search on Google and Bing for your main keyword. Next print the screen from the searches. Write your ads in Google doc or Word and print them out. Make sure you size your fonts to match the printed font size. Cut your ad out and place it in the #1 spot and then ask this question: If I was half asleep and scanned the search results, would the ads stand out like the A-Team van at a Prius convention? Or is it just another “me too” trying to scream louder? Keep writing and printing out ads until it stands out and makes the other ads blend in. That is the one secret to making all these ad networks work like gangbusters. It’s not the targeting, bid strategy, day parting or anything else. Because if you don’t have ads that demand your prospects attention, nothing else is going to work. Now stop what you are working on and take action on what I just shared. What I’m going to say today will be hard for some people to hear, but I think the truth needs to be said. Unfortunately, we live in a world that glamorizes entrepreneurs to the same level as celebrities and sports stars. Most people want to start a business and spend the majority of their time planning to succeed. But here’s the problem when you spend all your time: ● Writing the perfect business plan ● Looking for the perfect logo ● Building the perfect website ● Reading books on how billionaires work ● Installing the latest chat bot ● Planning how to spend your millions ● Consistently visiting your competitor’s site All those are exciting and fun things to do, but unfortunately they don’t get to the heart of the problem. If that’s how you’re spending your time, I can guarantee you’ll become another failed business statistic. Until a sale is made, you don’t have a business. And unfortunately way too many entrepreneurs spend their time in the hobby-and-dreaming phase and never get to the point of making a sale. The cold hard truth is that the businesses that succeed know their unit economics of acquiring and keeping a customer down to the penny.
