Curious About Measuring Awareness? 

When it comes to full-funnel marketing strategies for franchise brands, measuring brand awareness is often a challenge. National Account Director Jenn Melton explains, "It is an important for a franchisor to know if people are aware of the brand. It can be an important factor that can help determine how you plan your marketing efforts and where you apply your ad budget." Brand awareness also helps determine what type of messaging and creative your brand needs. 

So, how exactly does your company measure brand awareness? A brand lift study, or survey can help your brand discover where it is positioned among your audience or clients, and may also help educate you on where to go next. Jenn shares, "Franchisors can do surveys to determine what people actually know about their brand and their competitors. They may discover a large opportunity, or gap to tap into with marketing." By using quantitative data, your brand will be able to determine trends and levels of brand awareness that exist among certain audiences or regions. Additionally, it may help to educate your next steps and potential areas of improvement for you to tackle with marketing strategy.

Today, we are continuing our series on lead nurturing, and we’re going to talk about direct mail. So, after your prospect has opened up some emails and started through your journey, it’s time to send them something. 

Maybe they’ve opened up a certain percentage of your emails.
Maybe they have joined one of your webinars.
Maybe you talked to them and thought they were a great fit. Then they quit responding.

The idea is to send prospects something in the mail like a nice booklet about your brand that helps them learn more about your brand. Many people are still working from home, so they are spending more time looking at mail than they have in the past. And I’m not talking about a tri-fold brochure. I’m talking about a really nice booklet about the franchise opportunity.

Printed booklets could contain details about some of your franchise system’s strongest selling points, or they could be about a particular corporate support program that is of interest to a lot of your prospects. For instance, someone thinking about buying a franchise but with questions about cost would appreciate information on an in-house financing program. 

You need to personalize it, too. Write a note with it and make sure they know you’re sending this piece just for them.

When it comes to direct mail, franchise development demands a more strategic and cost-effective campaign. For a fran dev direct mail campaign, you would target the addresses of your leads. 

A printed piece has the advantage of being tangible, so a prospect can sit in their own home and flip through it at their leisure, or possibly share the information with their spouse. A booklet also might be less intimidating than a phone call to someone who is just starting to consider franchising. There’s also the novelty factor. As email has become more common, you’re less likely to receive a beautifully printed piece in your mailbox every day. It’s special.

Today we are continuing our series on lead nurturing, and I want to discuss webinars. I realize because there are fewer trade shows right now, many brands hopped on the webinar bandwagon. Let’s talk about why webinars are so important. 

A webinar gives your leads the chance to learn about the opportunity as part of a group without putting them on the spot.

We were talking to a franchise system a few months ago whose sales team did PowerPoint presentations to interested candidates. This works great for some, but what about those who aren’t ready to have a one-on-one phone call with a sales person just yet? That might feel like they are taking a bigger step or committing, so maybe they aren’t ready for that yet. In a webinar, prospects can come in and listen more anonymously without feeling like you’re going to have a sales person hounding them. It’s on their terms. They can even choose to watch a recording of it, and if they have questions, they can ask more details. Again, it’s on their terms. 

Webinars also are inexpensive to produce. Your sales team can lead the presentation using webinar software. It’s easier for them to share their passion for the brand in this format than in an email drip campaign. And a webinar gives them the opportunity to speak directly to people who have already expressed interest in your brand.

To customize the journey for those attending a webinar, follow up by sending a personalized note and more information about your brand. Next week, we will talk about how you can use direct mail for your lead nurturing efforts.

Last week, we started a series on nurturing the leads you have, so let’s start with email, the most common nurturing technique. I know many of you are already sending emails to leads, whether you have an automated drip campaign or you are simply sending out links to your blogs or media placements. A steady stream of emails helps to keep your brand top-of-mind without being overwhelming.

I was talking with a franchise development director recently about email drip campaigns, and he said, “Oh we already do that! We send new leads three emails!” But of course there’s a lot more to an effective email campaign than sending out a handful of prewritten messages. 

If your CRM, or customer relationship management system, is equipped with marketing automation tools, you can set it up to trigger a series of emails. That helps you better gauge a new lead’s interest level and how ready they are to move forward with an opportunity. This allows you to score leads so that you can know whether they are tire kickers, just starting to consider franchising or ready to sign on the dotted line. 

But don’t stop there. 

Your CRM should also allow you to segment your leads list by geography, engagement level and other attributes. 

We recommend you sort your lists so that you can send emails that feel personal and relevant. For example, you could use your CRM to segment a list of leads who already own a business in your industry, so you could send them an email about converting an existing business to a franchise location. 

If a lead has engaged with your emails – opening it, reading it and hopefully, clicking through to your website to learn more – you’ll want to continue to nurture that relationship with some other tools in the box. So next week, we will talk about webinars.

I am going to spend the next several weeks talking about lead nurturing….
First, what is lead nurturing? It’s a process of building relationships with prospects with the goal of converting them when they're ready. You’ve either gotten a lead organically (meaning they came to you), or you’ve gotten a lead through paid advertising (which means they were interested in your brand at some point, so they clicked on a paid ad to learn more). 

Either scenario means they are interested in your brand, but the chances of them suddenly buying into what you have to offer are still very low. So, you have to nurture that relationship and continue to talk to them and keep them informed, so that when they’re ready, they think of your franchise first. 

Many times, franchise development and leadership teams get frustrated when they don’t make the sale within a few phone calls. They are quick to say the lead wasn’t quality or even worse, the lead is dead. But many times, that’s actually not true — they’re just not ready to pull the trigger. Maybe they are just learning about franchising and somehow they came across your brand. Or maybe they are actively looking to start a new career, but they just aren’t ready yet.

The idea is to keep them informed of all the great reasons they should become part of your brand – whether it takes a month, six months or a year.

You should have a strong plan to nurture the leads you already have. Next week we will talk about nurturing your leads with emails.
