We’ve been thinking about all the misinformation or lack of information we get about sex and the over 40 woman. Fancy, conducted a survey confirming women in this age group feel misrepresented and for the most part, totally ignored by brands. The survey also revealed these women are feeling pretty great about themselves: happier, more confident, and sexier than they thought they’d be at their age.

Seems the world’s been trying to dupe women, and everyone else, into believing we will hit some “older” age wall and our physical and mental well-being will all go to shit.

The truth is a relief! In fact, as sex toy companies revel in their COVID time profits, a big part of the gain is directly attributable to those sexy women looking for new ways to claim the pleasure they deserve.

And it’s not just sex toys. Any brand that doesn’t take these women and their sense of self seriously is leaving money on the table.

In the advertising world, “mom” = “harried woman, 25-35, with toddlers through grade schoolers, trying to hold it all together.” There’s precious little that touches the experience of the 48 year old mother managing college application season while caring for elderly parents and more than likely trying to hold down a job. Or the anxiety we might feel while seeing a teenager sleep (there are so many opportunities to see a teenager sleep!), wondering about having “done it right” in a world where there are no do overs. Or that the pride we experience when we’re invited to their first apartment is the same as when we saw them take their first steps. Because life is a series of first steps and as parents we are filled with awe and emotion at all of them.

Think about the way your brand portrays motherhood, and ask yourself if you might tell a different story.

Keep in mind, the lives women over 40 are living out loud, in full view, are not sugar coated. It’s not all rainbows and rosé. There are challenges, sorrows, anger, and frustrations. But there is also joy and laughter and triumph and most of all, there is community. Because now that we know we are out there, now that we know how many of us there actually are, now that we are making ourselves visible and heard, now there is no going back.

So, brands, the question really is: are you with us?

Fancy surveyed 500 #womenover40, https://lnkd.in/eRvM7Xd, and found that 7 out of 10   said brands should play a stronger role in advancing women’s issues and 9 out of 10 felt brands should play a positive role in debunking gender stereotypes. Promoting women-owned brands gives you opportunity to do both.

When we surveyed nearly 500 women over 40, https://zcu.io/jhUb, a full 80% of them said they felt younger, cooler, or sexier than they expected they would when they were younger. What that says is that society sold them a story that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. And it’s giving them the opportunity to be the role models they never had. 

Brands, think about the way you portray women 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+, and on and on and on. Are you playing on insecurities and fears? And if so, are they yours or theirs?

There’s a world of nuance, often triggering, around the concept of motherhood. This year a bunch of brands gave us the option to opt out of Mothers Day marketing. This decision was largely a result of the pandemic and the fact that many many of us have lost people and being told to “Remember Mom!” every time we check our email is the gut punch that keeps on giving. The good news is that these opt-out efforts were really well received and this year won’t be the last. 

This way of thinking goes a long way towards connecting with consumers on a human level. Towards showing people that you understand their experience. They may be having a hard time, but they also may not, and the choice on types of communication they receive should be just that: a choice. https://zcu.io/xLnd 

Think about ways to show her you are on her page. Opportunities for her to curate her relationship with you. Moments where she and her experience are the only thing that counts.
