Many people will spend their entire lives there, never venturing outside to see what they could have or might be capable of achieving. But there is a cost for living our lives this way. While staying inside our bubble offers instant benefits, we end up sacrificing the potential for much better possibilities down the road. It’s worth remembering that getting out of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be a radical act. Maybe you challenge yourself to speak up in a meeting that you normally find intimidating or invite a new neighbor to go on a walk. In a workplace with bad smell, the energy is low and people are tired, constrained and conditions that sap energy in such a workplace are driven by “constraint, compliance, control and contract.” Workers feel constrained by their organization and the processes that govern them. They sense they are primarily there to comply with the rules. They feel their boss, management and the system exist primarily to control them, and that their job is just a contractual obligation. These values, obviously, don’t create the right context, or smell, for workers to proactively act or create change. #cornerstone3inc #leadership #teams

Many of us find it difficult to give critical feedback. One study of over 7,500 leaders found that over a fifth of leaders don’t bother doing it at all. Is it just the interpersonal discomfort that naturally arises from making critical assessments of others? Maybe not. A 1996 review of the feedback literature found that over one-third of “feedback interventions” actually reduced performance! We’re not just avoiding our own discomfort, we’re avoiding sharing a message that could hurt performance. So, how can a critical message be transformed into an inspirational one?
