I hosted a workshop last week for social media managers and during the presentation, I was talking about the impact of a good mentor. Naturally, I talked about Afton, who is the first mentor I ever hired. Ya'll... I was tearing up talking about the impact Afton has had on my business! In a workshop that I've taught numerous times before I was getting emotional. THAT is how important the right mentor is for you. The right mentor makes all the difference. I wouldn't be where I am today without the lessons I learned from her. This picture is from the first time we met in person in 2015 at an event called Haste and Hustle where we got to see Gary Vee live (tap for the blurry picture I took home as a souvenir). If you haven't hired a mentor yet, here's your sign to seek one out. You won't regret it!

Whatever your value systems are in your business, social media should reflect that. There's a lot of cancel culture happening on social media right now. There are a lot of people being called out. There's a lot of people making statements about things where you go, "Do they really believe this? Or they're just saying something because they want to say something?" Here's how I like to think about it: If I have a service-based business and I don't really need that many clients and I'm just on social media trying to show my expertise and my personality and what it's like working with me, that's really just a reflection of what's happening in my business at the time. So, if you're going to make a statement - like if something's happening in the news - you want that to come from what's already happening internally in my business. If it's not something that was a conversation with a team or you talked about it internally first, there's no reason to say, "Let's have a statement on social media." It's showcasing something that's inauthentic. Lead with your values on social media. That's how you bring authenticity to your message and make those genuine connections. Then, when something comes up you do want to make a statement about, you're not scrambling to come up with something, the values are already in place.

📣 NEW PODCAST EPISODE 📣 Entrepreneurs often get stuck with creating content randomly and not seeing any real results, so in an effort to solve this problem they create “content buckets” or rotate between a handful of content types. While that’s a step forward, it still doesn’t solve the problem of endlessly creating content that never moves the needle forward. You’ve just given them labels. So how do you really make sure that the social media content you create grows your audience and your business? I’m sharing a more effective way to think about content creation. Happy Pride Month! The celebration of human rights and civil liberties is one that should be a given… ... and yet, it’s moments like this -- a celebration of those who are a part of the LGTBQIA+ community -- that are a stark reminder that while our society has made progress, there’s still lots of work to be done. It truly takes a collective effort to change the treatment and perspectives of marginalized groups in our world. Today, I want to share a few ways I’m choosing change and being intentional with the language I use. I’ve been committing to making a conscious effort to be respectful with the words I say. For example, I’ve mostly replaced say “hey guys” with “hi friends” instead. I like how welcoming it is to invite conversation this way. I’ve also replaced “that’s crazy” with “that’s intense” or “that’s wild” instead. If you’re in the Savvy Social School, we recently released a very in depth guide on how you too can make the necessary changes to respect those in your communities and we continued the conversation on socially inclusive language in a coaching call last week. If you’re not in the School, now’s the time to join us!
