Meet Kay – a 34-year-old mother of four. She didn’t feel especially valued or appreciated. After she lost her job during the COVID-19 pandemic, her life went downhill fast. Unable to renew her lease, she lost her home. Then her verbally abusive, drug-addicted ex petitioned the courts to have her kids taken away from her – and somehow was granted custody. Homeless and depressed, Kay struggled mightily with her young nephew in her care.

Soon after, she found Metropolitan Ministries and applied to join our residential program.

After several weeks of emotional and spiritual guidance, Kay got back on her feet. She also got her children back from the unstable living situation they had been caught up in. Embracing the second chance given to her, Kay set out to rebuild her family life.

Yesterday we teamed up with Tito's Handmade Vodka through their Love, Titto’s Block-to-Block program to revitalize a community garden in one of Metropolitan Ministries’ NeighborHOPE Project communities. The project will help make fresh, nutritious food available in neighborhoods with high rates of food insecurity and is taking place at our new partner sites in Pinellas County, the The Sanderlin Center. The food grown in the garden will be used to feed families that utilize the food pantry at the center each week and for educational purposes with afterschool programs.

Love, Tito’s has donated $50,000 towards The NeighborHOPE Project and for the upkeep of the garden, allowing the grant to support our mission to alleviate suffering for the homeless and those at-risk of becoming homeless in the Tampa Bay area.

A huge thank you to the The Sanderlin Center, Tito's Handmade Vodka, Eckerd College Urban Agriculture professors and students, League of Women Voters of Florida, and all the volunteers who helped make this possible.

Metropolitan Ministries is working closely with local county government officials in our region to assist with the cold weather shelters. We will be providing 500 sandwiches and hot meals to Hillsborough County shelters for the cold weather, and a limited number of motel vouchers will be available for families with children without heat or seeking shelter. Donations of blankets, coats, hats, gloves, socks, etc. are welcome at our main campus donation drop-off location at 2101 N. Florida Ave. (behind our Bloom Again thrift store).
